How to choose a Blinds like a pro?

While closing blinds sounds simple, it can be quite tricky if you don’t have any experience with the specific type of blinds you want to close. Some blinds have cords, others have only a rod, and some have no rod or cord at all. Once you identify the type of blinds you want to close and know the right technique to use, though, you shouldn’t have too much difficulty.

Method 1

Single-String Blinds

Pull the cord toward the left to unlock the blinds. Grasp the cord firmly, and then bring it across the face of the window at a 45-degree angle. You may also need to pull on the cord slightly to unlock the blinds.[1]

    • Venetian blinds, mini blinds, micro blinds, pleated shades, and cellular shades are often single-string systems.

Release the cord slowly to lower the blinds. Once you unlock the blinds, continue to hold the cord to the left. Then, gradually loosen your grip to let it rise slowly.[2]

    • Be sure to continue to hold the cord to the left, or the blinds may lock into place.
    • Going slowly will help prevent the cord from becoming tangled in the locking mechanism.

Lower both strings of the cord at the same time to keep the blinds even. If your blinds become crooked as you lower them, pull down on just 1 of the 2 strings to make them even again. If the 2 sides become even more uneven, try pulling the other string, instead.[3]

Lock the blinds in place by pulling the cord to the right. Once the blinds reach where you want them, grasp the cord firmly to stop them from going up farther. Then, pull the cord over to the right of the window to lock the blinds in place.[4]

    • Let go of the cord slowly to make sure that the blinds are locked properly.
Method 2

Continuous-Cord Blinds

Check to see if the blinds are operated with a continuous cord loop. Look for a cord that looks like a loop. If it is a continuous-cord system, the blinds should either rise or lower evenly when you pull on 1 side of the cord loop.[5]

    • The length of a continuous-cord loop will not change when you raise and lower your blinds.
    • Roman shades and Venetian blinds often have continuous-cord loops.

Pull on 1 side of the cord to lower your blinds. If pulling on this side causes the blinds to rise, pull on the other side instead. Stop pulling when the blinds reach your desired level.[6]

Rotate the rod on the other side of the window to adjust the slats. If your set of blinds has adjustable slats, you can open and close these by twisting the rod hanging down from the top of the window. Just twist the rod to the right or left to move them.[7]

    • Not all blinds will have adjustable slats.
Method 3

Blinds with Rods

Slide the rod to move your blinds side to side. Many vertical and panel blinds are controlled with a rod and track system instead of a cord. To control this type, just pull the rod in the direction you want the blinds to move. The rod is usually located at the end of the blinds.[8]

    • Some models of vertical and panel blinds may be controlled with a single-string and/or continuous-cord system.
  2. Image titled Close Blinds Step 9

Twist the rod to rotate the blinds. Many vertical blinds can be rotated with a rod. Just twist the rod to the left to start. If the blinds don’t start to close, simply twist the rod in the opposite direction.[9]

Check the track system for any obstructions if the blinds aren’t moving. The track system is located at the top of the window or door. Stand on a stable chair or step ladder to reach the track system. Then, remove any obstruction you see.[10]
Method 4

Cordless Blinds

Pull down on the bottom bar to lower cordless blinds. Grab the middle of the bottom bar and pull down gently. When the blinds are where you want them, just let go and the blinds will stay in place.[11]

    • On some models, you may need to press a button or latch on the bottom bar to unlock the blinds.[12]
  2. Image titled Close Blinds Step 12
    2
Tilt the bottom bar down to rotate the slats on cordless blinds. If your blinds don’t have a rod, you may be able to adjust the angle of the slats with the bottom bar. Not all models of cordless blinds can be operated in this way, though.[13]

Close motorized blinds with a remote control. The specific controls for motorized blinds vary by make and model. On most models, you can close your blinds by pressing a down arrow or a button that says “close.” Refer to the owner’s manual if you’re unsure how to operate your blinds.[14]

    • If the remote control isn’t responding, try changing the batteries.
    • On some motorized models, you can also control the blinds with an app on your smartphone or with a smart home device.
